What Money Can't Buy

I am trying to understand why I took up tasks which others would normally avoid. These tasks won't earn me any money. In the contrary I have to put in a lot of efforts and at times money. I also have to deal with many objections, rejections and at certain time, humiliations!

So I tried to search my memory for what I have done and what I could remember!

I started to donate blood since 1982 and still keeping up till this very day. My current count is 104 times. I am hoping to make my 105th donation next week.

When I was teaching in my first school, I organized a Youth Camp for my Red Crescent Society members. It was hard work as nobody has done it before and I was new. I was in Semporna then and mind you Semporna was a very remote area in those days. Nevertheless the Youth Camp was a success.

When I was in my second school I started the RM1 a person campaign to collect donation for Victims of Bosnia Herzegovina. The school adopted my idea and it went big! It was another success.

When I was approached to organize the World Speech Day in 2016, I accepted and got down to work immediately. I only had 2 weeks to prepare. I managed to convince like-minded people to help me out. I also convinced speakers from different professions, age groups and genders to speak and to share their views and stories.

Many were skeptical whether it could actually take off, as there was no competition thus no attractive prizes. Not even lucky draws or refreshment offered. Furthermore who would listen to speeches for hours?

However, the event came out fine and even made history for being the first World Speech Day in Malaysia. World Speech Day then became an annual event. From 17 speakers in 2016, 22 speakers in 2017, 37 speakers in 2018 and this years we have at least 11 venues organizing the same event all over Malaysia. We are joining more 100 countries all over the world which we have been together since 2016!

What do I get at the end? Happiness and Hope! Happy because there are courageous speakers going on stage and speak. Happy because there are people like me who worked to provide opportunities to others to learn, to improve and to excel! Hopefully they would do likewise in the future!

I see hope because from all these people, near and far, I see humanity, I also see passion without boarders which is very much alive and kicking!

In a world flooded with negativity, hatred and selfishness, I choose to do something positive. My effort might be small but as long as others share my views and vision, it will gather weight sooner or later.

I am writing this not because I am bragging about what I have done but I believe in contributing positive contents to the cyber space. Are you with me?

Life Lesson 101: Work might not always earn us money but sometimes more than money could buy!
